The Green Canals of Amsterdam

2013 is a very special year in Amsterdam including the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the Canal Ring. The perfect moment not only to look at the past but also at the next 400 years. De Groene Grachten, an initiative of Wubbo Ockels, has as aim a sustainable canal ring.

From energy saving solutions in monuments to generating your own energy, we research all the different possibilities. Together with "Stadsherstel Amsterdam" we will supervise the conservation of a number of properties. By achieving sustainability measures at the canal ring, both a national and international audience can see that energy reduction can be achieved in a responsible manner while still preserving the value of our existing cultural heritage.

Our aim for 2013 is to realize the conservation of three properties. Working together with property owners, residents, businesses and the City of Amsterdam, we will explore innovative applications to make these properties energy neutral. These buildings will then serve as role models for the city and show what can be achieved. During three events in 2013 the properties will be open for public so everyone can see what can be done!

De Groene Menukaart - The Green Menu
The online tool Green Menu gives residents of monuments the opportunity to work on it themselves. On the 13th of March 2014 , the former astronaut launches this free tool with Marjan Minnesma in the ‘GrachtenLab’ of the Canal House Museum. This Green Menu provides answers to key questions such as: what do sustainable options do for comfort, how green are these options are and how is the funding and regulation organized? Using a 'wish list' the visitor can see immediately how to make a property sustainable to your own requirements and wishes.
